League Notes: Indian Supreme Court Tells BCCI To Fall In Line

Describing the Justice R.M. Lodha Committee report on the overhaul of the Board of Control for Cricket in India as "straight, rational and understandable," the Supreme Court on Thursday sternly advised the cricket body to "fall in line" with the recommendations. Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur told the BCCI: "These recommendations deserve respect. They have come from the most illuminated and respected members of the legal community. They have done extension deliberations with all stakeholders. Fall in line and save the trouble." The BCCI, represented by senior advocate Shekhar Naphade, said that the recommendations have to be extensively deliberated with 30-odd members and its implementation in full would give rise to "all sorts of complications," including the losing of BCCI's registration under the Tamil Nadu Registration Act. It said that "wrangles include the fate of the Board's landed assets spread over the country." But the Bench, also comprising Justice F.M.I. Kalifulla, "refused to be snowballed" by the Board's rendering of a list of "complications." Thakur said, "Then we have simple solutions. We will say that since BCCI has difficulties and impediments in respecting and implementing the recommendations, let the Lodha Committee continue and now help the Board to push through with the reforms ... What do you say, Mr. Naphade?" (THE HINDU, 2/4). ... FIBA issued a "strongly-worded advisory to all participating nations" to refrain from competing in the basketball competitions of the 12th South Asian Games to be held in India from Feb. 11-16. The advisory has been issued "in accordance with the unanimous decision" taken by the FIBA Asian Board meeting on Jan. 30, "taking cognizance of the unacceptable interference of the Indian Olympic Association in affairs relating to the Basketball Federation of India," duly recognized by the world body (THE HINDU, 2/4). ... National Rugby League bosses "will be briefed on the hunt" for the game's next CEO at a club CEOs meeting in Auckland on Friday as "two other figures head-hunted for the job emerged." While there is an increasing belief that the new CEO will be an existing league identity such as NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg or Warriors CEO Jim Doyle, the net "has been cast wide via the recruitment agency" appointed by the Australian Rugby League Commission, Crown & Marks. The latest name to emerge among the non-league figures approached by recruiters is John Warn, the highly respected chair of Cricket New South Wales who "has carved out a successful career in Sydney with retail giant Westfield," while NIB Health Funds chief and Newcastle Knights board member Mark Fitzgibbon "is also believed to have been sounded out" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 2/4).
