Premier League Clubs Will Get Cash Boost If Europa League Is Taken Seriously

Premier League clubs could be offered cash bonuses of up to £10M ($14.6M) "for taking the Europa League seriously," according to Dan King of THE SUN. EPL CEO Richard Scudamore and the top clubs are "concerned England could lose its fourth Champions League spot" within two years unless the teams start "going deep into Europe’s second tier competition." Although Chelsea lifted the trophy in '13, "following a humiliating group stage exit from the Champions League," Fulham in '10 was the only other side since Middlesbrough in '06 to "reach the Europa League Final." But with England "likely to drop below Italy" into fourth in the UEFA coefficients ranking at the start of next term, clubs will "be asked to approve plans to put cash on the table for sides that go deep into competition from next term." With England, Italy and Germany all "scrapping for second and third slot behind runaway leaders Spain" in the UEFA standings, the cash for performance idea "will be on the table." The principle of paying central TV cash to clubs "already benefiting from Europa League income is a controversial one." But the "radical suggestion is another demonstration of the freedom and flexibility which the new TV deals will give England's top flight" (THE SUN, 2/3).
