Eden Park CEO Guy Ngata Planning To Host State Of Origin Matches

The "freshly minted" Eden Park CEO, Guy Ngata, has "outlined his plans to poach a State of Origin game as the ground prepares to host the all-conquering Auckland Nines," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Ngata plans to "raise the prospect with the ARL Commission if the opportunity presents itself in coming days." He said, "I have been in the role for a month and we’re definitely looking at elements around stadium utilization and how we can drive a greater diversity of content. If you look at marquee events in Australasia, State of Origin is certainly one of the premium football products, rugby league products around. If we have the opportunity to be part of a consortium or bid to try to secure a game at Eden Park, that would certainly be something in our thought process." The existing State of Origin cycle is due to end in '18, leaving Ngata with "plenty of time to win over NRL officials," who have raised the prospect of "taking the game's flagship event on the road as part of their efforts to promote the sport and extract the most value from the concept." Ngata’s challenge will be to "convince the commission to take a punt on Eden Park." The Nines presents the "perfect opportunity to showcase the ground’s ability to host big events -- the entire eight-man commission is in Auckland this week" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 2/5).
