Liga MX Side Tigres UANL To Build New 85,000-Seat Stadium In Monterrey

Liga MX side Tigres UANL now "has almost everything agreed upon to begin construction of a new stadium in Monterrey," according to AS. The project "is ambitious and includes not only an 85,000-capacity stadium but also a movie theatre, mall and hotels." It will cost $500M and be "100% sustainable," using solar energy. The club will build the stadium on the shores of the Santa Catarina River and it is expected to be ready by '18. In addition to the stadium, the complex will include two hotels and "will look to become a tourism and economic hub for the city." The construction "will be supported by investment from English capital, with Cemex providing the cement." The "principal doubt is in the location, as it depends on the approval of Mexico's National Water Commission (Conagua) to build on the shores of the Santa Catarina." It is expected that the stadium would "host four NFL and MLB games over four years" (AS, 1/28). NUEVO DÍA reported architecture firm HOK, which designed the stadium, said that the new home of Tigres UANL "would not only host some NFL games, but possibly even an NFL franchise due to its proximity to the U.S."  HOK said, "According to NFL figures, Mexico is its biggest market outside the U.S. with more than 20 million fans. ... Monterrey could host everything from exhibition games to an NFL franchise or the first international Super Bowl" (NUEVO DÍA, 1/28).
