U.K. Doping Officials In Advanced Talks To Clean Up Russia

UK Anti-Doping is in talks about a deal to run drug-testing programs "across all sports in scandal-hit Russia," according to Rick Broadbent of the LONDON TIMES. WADA approached UKAD to assist RUSADA, the disgraced Russian equivalent, and there was a "scoping visit" before Christmas. UKAD CEO Nicole Sapstead admitted that the organization had "a lot to lose" from the arrangement, but said that she would be "disappointed" if the deal provoked anger from British athletes who had missed out on medals to Russian cheats. Sapstead said that it "would be wrong to see a deal as giving cheats a helping hand." She said, "I would ask, what's the alternative to not engaging? This is about track and field, but what about all the other sports not suspended from going to Rio?" Sapstead said that "it was not a done deal" and would reveal the detail if it happened, but added that "money was not a deal-breaker" (LONDON TIMES, 1/21).
