DFL CEO Warns Of High Expectation For Bundesliga's Upcoming Media Rights Tender

German Football League (DFL) CEO Christian Seifert "has warned of high expectations for the Bundesliga's upcoming media rights tender," according KICKER. Seifert: "We shouldn't rock the Bundesliga only to chase after phantom revenue. Solidarity is a trademark of German football and no one wants this principle to be shaken in its core." Seifert hinted at a recent proposal by St. Pauli and statements of Bayern Munich. Both clubs "questioned the solidarity group of the 36 Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga clubs." He also "warned of comparison to the Premier League and its record broadcast rights deal." He said, "The media rights contract for the English Premier League is good for the Premier League. But it not achievable for any other European league." The Bundesliga currently gets an estimated €850M ($928M) annually from its domestic and int'l media deals. The new broadcast rights period "will start with the '17-18 season" (KICKER, 1/19).
