BBC To Investigate If Football Rights Money Paid To FIFA Was Used For 'Corrupt Practices'

The BBC has announced it will look into whether any of the money it paid to FIFA for football rights was used "for corrupt practises," according to Kate McCann of the London TELEGRAPH. BBC Trust Chair Rona Fairhead was "bounced into agreeing to investigate the claims by a committee of MPs" after admitting the organization has not looked into the possibility so far. Culture Media & Sport Select Committee Chair Jesse Norman "laid into" Fairhead for failing to recognize the "serious problems" posed by the BBC's payments to FIFA in light of allegations money was paid to officials in the form of bribes. Citing the "serious public interest case" for the broadcaster to investigate whether any of the money it paid the footballing body could have been used in this way, Norman said, "You don't seem to recognize the problem at all." Fairhead said that the behavior of FIFA was "not acceptable" and admitted the Trust has not investigated its own involvement. Fairhead: "We will look and see if there is anything that can be done but it has to be done on behalf of the license fee payer." BBC Trust Dir Alex Towers, who was also at the committee hearing, admitted that he was "not sure we would be able to reach out to FIFA and find out what happened to that precise amount of money" (TELEGRAPH, 1/19).
