Kuwait Government Sues Sports Chiefs Over International Suspension

Kuwait's government "sued top sports executives in the country, including two prominent royals, accusing them of deliberately causing the suspension of the Gulf state from international sports," according to the AFP. The lawsuit "was filed Tuesday by the government's legal department against Kuwait Olympic Committee head Sheikh Talal Fahad Al-Sabah and 14 other board members including his elder brother Sheikh Ahmad," one of the most powerful figures in football and the Olympics. The lawsuit "blames the board members for causing Kuwait's suspension" by FIFA and the IOC by informing the two bodies that Kuwaiti laws allow government interference in sports (AFP, 1/13). REUTERS' Mahmnoud Harby wrote the sports authority's lawsuit "accuses members of the committee of having submitted complaints about government interference to the IOC, thereby helping get the country banned." The Public Authority for Sports filed the lawsuit for initial damages of 5,001 Dinars ($16,400) "for deliberately helping bring about the suspension." If successful, "the case may open the way for another suit" to recover more than 400M Dinars ($362,000), the amount the sports authority said it has spent on sport over the last five years (REUTERS, 1/13). The AFP reported the Kuwaiti government repeatedly said that "the country's laws are in line with international sports charters." It "is the third time since 2007 that FIFA and the IOC have suspended Kuwait for alleged government interference" (AFP, 1/14).

IN ISRAEL: In Jerusalem, Gil Ronen reported Israeli nationalist activists are "about to release yet another secretly recorded video, which will show how members of Breaking the Silence and ex-diplomat Alon Liel discussed the possibility of getting international sports bodies to boycott Israel." Among the possibilities discussed "was a boycott" on Israel by FIFA. Businessman and nationalist pundit Shimon Riklin claimed on Monday that the "discussion included the idea of getting Israel banned from the upcoming Olympics" (ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS, 1/13).
