French rugby player KÉVIN AUDOUIN of Fédéral 2 side Bédarrides died from a heart attack Saturday during a friendly match against Hyères. After scoring a try, the 23-year-old told his teammates he did not feel well and fell to the ground (OUEST-FRANCE, 1/10). ... Pakistan cricketer YASIR SHAH "has decided to appeal against his suspension for testing positive for a banned substance." He has informed the Int'l Cricket Council through the Pakistan Cricket Board that he will "contest the case." The ICC will "now form an independent tribunal within two weeks to hear the case" (ESPN, 1/10). ... Former Pakistan internationals SALMAN BUTT and MOHAMMAD ASIF have returned to cricket after five-year bans for spot-fixing in a 2010 Test against England (BBC, 1/10).

COMING CLEAN: Dutch 1984 Olympic discus Gold Medalist RIA STALMAN admitted to "taking anabolic steroids to enhance her performance, 31 years after triumphing at the Los Angeles Games." Stalman: "During the final two years of my career, I daily used a light dosage of anabolic steroids." Stalman, 32 at the time, said that her decision to take part in doping "was sparked after a pre-Olympic visit to the former East Germany." She said she saw signs there that "many women were using steroids." Stalman, now 64, said, "I wanted to beat them badly" (AFP, 1/9).

NOTABLE DEATH: American TYLER ALEXANDER, one of the "key figures in the founding" of the McLaren F1 team, died aged 75. Alexander was "centrally involved at McLaren for more than 40 years" after being recruited by driver BRUCE MCLAREN to help set up the team in '63. He left in '83, two years after McLaren was taken over by current Chair & CEO RON DENNIS, but returned in '89 and worked there until he retired in '08. Dennis: "Tyler was one of the first pillars of our company. Bruce couldn't have asked for a sturdier pair of shoulders upon which to help build the team's reputation. Quite simply, Tyler lived and breathed McLaren" (BBC, 1/7).
