Int'l Football Association Board Recommends Video Technology Trials

Video technology assistance for referees is set to be trialed in football around the world this year after the lawmakers of the game, who hold the power to instigate change in football’s rules, "overwhelmingly supported" the notion at their Annual Business Meeting in London on Thursday, according to Michael Puterflam of FOX SPORTS. The Int'l Football Association Board "will recommend to their AGM in early March that a video review system be put in place in the next two or three years to assist referees with questionable goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity." If approved, video refereeing trials "are expected to take place across entire competitions with a view of gaining sufficient information to create one uniform system." The tested video assistance systems "will vary and IFAB envisages that in some cases someone may be watching monitors in a truck and providing information into referee’s ear, while in other instances the referee will be running to the sideline to review replays, which would combine the evidence on offer with the referee’s feel for the game from the centre of the pitch" (FOX SPORTS, 1/8).
