Event Notes: Liverpool Legends Exhibition Match Draws 40,815 To ANZ Stadium

Former Liverpool player Steven Gerrard and his array of retired teammates "drew an impressive crowd of 40,815 in their 4-0 exhibition match win over an Australian legends side at ANZ Stadium" on Tuesday night. Sydney’s "big wet, the exorbitant ticket prices and a clash with the Big Bash across the road simply weren’t enough to halt Liverpool fans turning out in droves" (AAP, 1/8). ... Queenslanders "will have to wait longer to find out why the Gold Coast's Commonwealth Games organisers chose an American-owned company over three Australian bid teams to produce the 2018 opening and closing ceremonies." The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corp. has postponed a press conference, initially scheduled for Wednesday, "to explain the appointment of Jack Morton Worldwide to orchestrate the showpiece ceremonies" (AAP, 1/7). ... For just S$2 ($1.4), children under 12 years old "will be able to catch two days of world-class rugby action at the National Stadium when the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens comes to town in April." Event organizers Rugby Singapore "have kept prices for children and youth affordable" -- those aged 12 to 18 pay S$25 ($17) for a category 3 season pass -- in a bid to attract more young fans to the April 16-17 event (Singapore TODAY, 1/7). ... Italy "has been chosen to host the world race walking team championships" while Poland has been awarded the world U20 championships after Russia was stripped of both events which will be held this year. The IAAF announced Thursday that Rome "will host the team walking event in May." Bydgoszcz in Poland "was the only bidder" (AP, 1/7).
