Cricket Australia 'Delighted' With Competition For Test Matches

Cricket Australia has "welcomed the call for two Tests in Sydney, or anywhere else, and is delighted to see the associations not only fighting for the right to host extra games, but also day-night fixtures," according to Peter Lalor of THE AUSTRALIAN. The Sydney Cricket Ground Trust has "startled the other venues by putting in a bid to have two Tests next summer." On hearing the news, Melbourne suggested that what was good for the SCG was good for the Melbourne Cricket Ground and "they should have two Tests as well." Hobart, Canberra and, "to a lesser degree, Perth are all watching anxiously." There are only six Tests scheduled for the summer and two of the three venues "would be likely to miss out should two be staged elsewhere." CA CEO James Sutherland, meanwhile, "was delighted that his product was in such big demand and he didn't rule out changes to future fixtures." Sutherland said, "I welcome the interest that everyone has in hosting a Test match or Test matches in some cases. It's actually a re-endorsement of Test cricket and day-night Test cricket that more people want to host these matches." Sutherland is "also delighted that the inaugural day-night Adelaide Test, which was greeted with scepticism by players and traditionalists, proved to be so successful that other venues are now clamouring to host a day-nighter." Sutherland was "less confident about day-night games" when England is in Australia for the '17-18 season. Sutherland: "Needless to say the summer after that is an Ashes summer and probably that established tradition will continue" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 1/6).
