Dutch Club FC Twente Banned From European Competition Until '19

Dutch Eredivisie side FC Twente has been "banned from European competition for three seasons" because its contracts with investment fund Doyen Sports broke longstanding int'l football rules, according to Tariq Panja of BLOOMBERG. The club will not appeal the Dutch FA's (KNVB) sanctions. It "also agreed to cooperate with an independent investigation into its financing under the threat of losing" its football license, and to pay a fine of €45,250 ($49,454). The '10 Dutch champion "is the first team to face sanctions after many of Doyen's financial documents, including details of its contract with Twente, were leaked onto the Internet." FIFA said that it is "looking into several agreements connected to Malta-based Doyen," which has repeatedly said that "it follows regulations in all the countries it operates in." KNVB said, "FC Twente has suppressed some additions in the contract with investment company Doyen Sports and thereby deliberately misled the license commission" (BLOOMBERG, 12/15). The BBC reported FIFA banned third-party player ownership "as a threat to the game's integrity because investors can inflate transfer fees to make a profit." FC Twente said that the sanctions would "hit hard at the heart of our club." Twente's professional license will be revoked if it fails to "fully cooperate with an independent investigation" into the club's structure (BBC, 12/16). REUTERS reported club President Aldo van der Laan resigned last month "after leaked documents from Twente suggested the team had entered into an agreement" with Doyen Sports that contravened KNVB rules. The agreement reportedly allowed investors, who injected €5M ($5.5M) into the club "in exchange for the transfer rights of seven players, to have a say in Twente's transfer dealings," which is against int'l football rules (REUTERS, 12/15).
