City Officials Reject Real Madrid's Planned Renovations Of Santiago Bernabéu

Madrid city officials have rejected Real Madrid's plans to upgrade the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, according to the AP. The city said that it will "only accept" a remodeling proposal that does not affect the interests of local citizens. A Spanish court earlier this year "annulled permission granted to Real Madrid by the previous city government, saying it broke Spanish land use law." The city said on Wednesday that a new project will only be considered if it is "in the best interests of the general public" (AP, 12/16). In Madrid, Sergio Valentín reported renovations to the Santiago Bernabéu "will have to wait." Madrid officials "do not prohibit remodeling, but have made it clear they will not allow it under the terms presented by Real Madrid." Madrid Councilor for Sustainable Urban Development José Manuel Calvo said that the city will only consider renovations "that are compatible with public interest and do not occupy more public land" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 12/16).
