English rugby int'l ALEX CORBISIERO is taking a year off from rugby at the end of this season after admitting that he is "mentally drained." He has "no definite plans for his sabbatical at the moment" other than to spend time in the U.S. with his grandparents, with whom he lived when he was young. However, he insists that "he will return to the sport." The 27-year-old, who "should be at the peak of his playing career, has suffered a series of injury problems." Last week "he underwent knee surgery" (SUNDAY TIMES, 12/13). ... ROGER FEDERER said that he will be "teaming up with MARTINA HINGIS for Switzerland in mixed doubles at next year's Rio Olympics." Federer on Friday tweeted that he is "really excited" about the pairing, and posted a photo of the two tennis players from "what he said was 15 years ago" (AP, 12/12). ... England's 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper GORDON BANKS revealed that he "is being treated for kidney cancer for a second time." The 77-year-old "is having chemotherapy to try to avoid a transplant" (BBC, 12/13). ... Ivory Coast footballer YAYA TOURE has "held off fierce competition" from Algeria's YACINE BRAHIMI, the '14 winner, and Gabon's PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG to pick up the BBC African Footballer of the Year for '15. The Man City player "captained his country to the African Nations Cup title in February, ending a 23-year wait to lift the trophy, and has remained an integral part of his club side throughout the year" (REUTERS, 12/11). ...ALEXANDRE PATO has said that "he wants to move to England, opening the door for a number of Premier League clubs to sign the Brazilian in January." Pato's career "looked to be on a downward trajectory when the injury-hit forward returned to Brazil." However, Pato is "now injury-free and having scored 26 goals in 59 matches during a loan spell with São Paulo, he claims he is ready to return to European football." Corinthians is "reportedly ready to sell" the Brazil int'l in January (PA, 12/13). ... Int'l DJ and music producer DAVID GUETTA "is asking fans around the world to unite" by seeking the help of 1 million supporters to record the official UEFA Euro 2016 song. Guetta, the tournament's music ambassador, will devise the soundtrack but wants the help of as many supporters as possible to create a global anthem. He will take the fans' recordings and mix them into his UEFA Euro 2016 anthem This One's For You, which will be released in spring '16 (UEFA).

CRICKET AUSTRALIA LOSS: Cricket Australia Board Dir and former South Australia Premier JOHN BANNON died in Adelaide at 72. He had battled cancer since '07, "but been a member of the CA board" since '08. After "a lengthy political career in which he was SA's longest serving Labor Premier, Bannon served on numerous boards but was a key player in Australian cricket both with CA and the South Australian Cricket Association." His time on the CA board "encompassed the sweeping governance reforms of 2012, which saw the board changed from a structure of 14 state-appointed directors to nine independent appointees" (ESPN, 12/13).
