Euro 2016 Demand Sends Hotel Prices Soaring In French Cities

Ten French cities will host the Euro 2016 (24 teams, 51 matches) in June, and they “will be invaded by visitors from all over the continent,” according to de Blauwe & Bourcier of QUE CHOISIR. Faced with this influx, hotels will “raise prices for their rooms during the tournament,” according to a study of 445 establishments done by the magazine. The study compared the hotel prices of the week before the first match to those of the night of the first match. The price of a hotel room “for two adults rose, on average, by 45%,” from €97 ($106) to €141 ($154). During the 1998 World Cup in France, hotel prices “rose 41%,” with an average price of about €84. At the start of November, when the study was conducted, a “number of hotels were already at capacity for the first night of the tournament.” Of the 445 establishments studied, “the vacancy rate was only 39%.” Saint-Étienne saw the “highest percent rise in prices,” (180%) from €40 ($44) the week before to €112 ($122). Paris/Saint-Denis saw the lowest average rise in prices (37%), but “remained the most expensive hotel room in France” at €204 ($222) for a room the night of the first match (QUE CHOISIR, 12/1).
