League Notes: RPA, RFU And Premiership Rugby Agree On Five-Year $10.5M Deal

The Rugby Players' Association, Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby have agreed to a new five-year, £7M ($10.5M) deal "for player welfare, personal development and education programmes." The agreement, which will help support around 1,000 people -- 650 current RPA members and over 350 former members, "was hailed as vitally important by RPA Group CEO Damian Hopley and a milestone in the organization's 17-year history" (RUNNING RUGBY, 11/26). ... Kenya, "facing scrutiny from world anti-doping officials and criticism that it is not doing enough to tackle the problem, has banned seven more athletes for doping offences, raising the total number of Kenyan drug cases in the last three years to 40." The list included Emily Chebet, a double world cross country champion and Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist (REUTERS, 11/28). ... Cricket South Africa expressed "enormous delight" at Int'l Cricket Council Chair Shashank Manohar's comments hitting out at the Big Three's "bullying," while Sri Lanka Cricket has also shown support to Manohar by calling him a "sensible man." Manohar: "I don't agree with the three major countries bullying the ICC" (NATION, 11/28).

FIBA: Seven leading European national federations met in Rome on Thursday to "discuss the current remodeling of the European club competitions." The participants "unanimously decided to continue the ongoing work on the Basketball Champions League project, making the necessary modifications to take into consideration the desired sporting principles and openness of a top level club competition system in order to launch the competition as planned" for the '16-17 season (FIBA). FIBA has "lifted the ban on the Russian federation (RBF) with immediate effect." FIBA said in a statement on Friday that it was ending the suspension as the RBF had dealt with the issues that gave rise to the ban in "a very positive manner" (REUTERS, 11/27).
