National Rugby League Side Sydney Roosters Fears Player Burnout

The National Rugby League just signed off on a new A$1.8B ($1.2B) TV deal -- but now it faces "the threat of angry players revolting and potentially boycotting games at the start of next season," according to Paul Crawley of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. Rugby League Players Association Chair & General President Clint Newton has a meeting with Australian Rugby League Commission Chair John Grant and NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg on Monday. The RLPA "is demanding answers in relation to the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement review that has dragged on since March -- and concerns over fatigue and burnout in the wake of the 2016 season draw." Manly coach Trent Barrett has already labeled the amount of five-day turnarounds his players will face as "unfair and dangerous." Newton "refused to enter into discussion about the possibility of industrial action." But he conceded if the RLPA cannot come to a resolution "then everything is on the table" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 11/29). The AAP reported the Sydney Roosters "will ask for a please explain" over the number of five-day turnarounds it has received in next season’s NRL draw. Roosters COO of Football Brian Canavan said that he was "mystified" by his side’s schedule, "which has them listed to back up four times in the space of five days in the first 20 rounds." Canavan said, "We’re going to question about how these sort of things have arrived. ... Our sport science people have done research on (player burnout). The other aspect is if you play a number of these games with five-day turnarounds the performance levels drop as well because the players just aren’t as energized or able to perform at their peak" (AAP, 11/29).
