New Argentine President Mauricio Macri Plans To Break Up Fan Gangs

Argentine football will bet on a U.S. "FBI style" to stop violence in the sport and "allow visiting fans to return to stadiums," according to the DPA. This is according to new Argentine President Mauricio Macri, who will begin his tenure on Dec. 10. Future Argentine Security Secretary Eugenio Burzaco said that Macri's goal is to "break up the mafias that are barras bravas" -- referring to clubs' violent fans. Burzaco: "We have to end the extortion phenomenon of the barras bravas. It can't be delegated to the clubs, but it is the State that has to fill a clear role so that visiting fans can return to the fields" (DPA, 11/28). In Buenos Aires, Brusotti reported Argentine FA presidential candidate Marcelo Tinelli said, "We are going to commercialize Fútbol para Todos." Macri will maintain the program, "but with substantial changes, like revenue from private advertising to reduce state spending." Tinelli: "The product has to be improved. We cannot lose anything that generates revenue. We also have to consider that we have different platforms to access football and take advantage of them" (CLARÍN, 11/28).
