Names In The News

Barcelona's Provincial High Court will be "the forum to pronounce a final judgement" in the tax fraud case against Barcelona striker LIONEL MESSI and his father, "instead of a single judge at the Vilanova i la Geltrú criminal court as was initially planned." The Gavà court which has been presiding over the proceedings against Messi has "upheld public prosecutors' request that the player and his father be judged by a High Court with a jury and not by a single-judge court" (MARCA, 11/24). ... Former Scottish Premiership side Celtic player BILLY MCNEILL is to be honored alongside JIMMY JOHNSTONE, JOCK STEIN and BROTHER WALFRID "with a statue at Celtic Park." The man who "became the first British footballer to hold aloft the European Cup is to have a permanent tribute to him at the stadium." The statue "will be unveiled" on Dec. 19 ahead of a league game with Motherwell. Big Billy, known to all as "Cesar," won nine league titles, seven Scottish Cups, six Scottish cups and the European Cup, making 790 appearances and scoring 35 goals. No "player has played more times for Celtic" (HERALD SCOTLAND, 11/24). ... WAYNE ROONEY is being "targeted as the face of the revamped Chinese Super League as China tries to establish itself as a major football nation." The ManU and England captain, who turned 30 last month, "has struggled for goals despite his club's fine start to the season, netting just twice in 11 Premier League fixtures." The striker has three years left on his £300,000 ($450,000)-a-week deal at Old Trafford, but according to The Sun the CSL believes Rooney "can be tempted into finishing his career with a lucrative move to Asia." The league has "recently signed a TV deal" worth more than £800M ($1.2B), while Chinese President XI JINPING has "made it clear he wants China to become a footballing superpower." ROBINHO, TIM CAHILL and DEMBA BA have already signed up to CSL clubs, while SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON and LUIS FELIPE SCOLARI "both manage teams in the league." However, organizers believe the "tempting of England's leading ever scorer would prompt other big-names to join the league" (London INDEPENDENT, 11/24). ... FIFA presidential candidate PRINCE ALI BIN AL-HUSSEIN will speak at a National Press Club luncheon on Dec. 4. He will address how FIFA can create a better governing body in the wake of FIFA’s recent corruption scandal (National Press Club).
