Team Great Britain Among Others Rated 'High Risk' Terror Target At Rio Olympics

Team Great Britain at next year's Rio Olympics "will have extra security following the Paris terror attacks," according to Laurie Hanna of the London DAILY MIRROR. Athletes including Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah will be "under increased guard after the Islamic State assaults that killed 130 people." Brazilian anti-terror authorities will work with MI5 agents to "assess the threat to athletes amid fears" that an attack could be launched. Ministers said that they were aware of the risk of "lone wolf" attacks and they were "ramping up security plans that have been in place since last year’s World Cup in the country." There are "fears terrorists could target tourist landmarks" such as Copacabana beach and the Maracana stadium. Experts also warned that the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro "is a potential target." Former National Secretary of Public Security Jose Vicente Filho said, "It is clear that the terrorists like to destroy statues of other people's religions." As well as Team GB, athletes from the U.S., Canada, France, Egypt, Russia and Syria are also "considered to be high risk targets." Brazil Minister for Security Ricardo Berzoini said, "There is no limit to the concern of the Brazilian government with terrorism. We are already working in cooperation with international intelligence agencies" (DAILY MIRROR, 11/24).
