FA Issues New 'If In Doubt, Sit Them Out' Concussion Guidelines

The FA issued "new guidelines to all involved with the game on how to deal with concussions," according to Matt Slater of the BBC. They provide information "on symptoms, and how quickly a player should return." Broadly speaking, an adult should sit out "at least a week and only return when signed off by a doctor," and U18s should rest for at least two weeks. Head Injury Expert Dr. Willie Stewart: "They are a fantastic development and hopefully have the potential to impact on sport in England as a whole." The safety-first guidelines, developed by an expert panel set up in April, were prompted by "rising fears over head injuries across all sports." Stewart added, "The guidelines clearly demonstrate the FA's strong leadership around this issue and provide clear information on the immediate management of the injury around the simple principle of 'if in doubt, sit them out.'" Stewart was one of eight leading concussion experts on the FA panel but he has "not always been so complimentary of football's efforts in this area" (BBC, 11/24). REUTERS' Simon Jennings reported the guidelines state that "a player suspected of being concussed should be immediately removed from play or training and must not return to play that day." FA Head of Medical Services Dr. Ian Beasley said, "The paramount priority for the FA is player safety, and so the publication of these concussion guidelines is integral to achieving an unprecedented high level of care and safety for players at all levels." The issue of concussion "gained prominence" in England after the death of former West Bromwich Albion striker Jeff Astle in '02, at the age of 59. Astle, known for his skill at heading, "died from a brain condition most commonly associated with boxers" (REUTERS, 11/24).
