Racing NSW Announces Country, Provincial Prize Money Boost In $29M Tax Parity Package

Racing NSW announced a A$40M ($29M) "package boost to country and provincial racing from the proceeds of the tax parity legislation starting from July 1 next year," according to Chris Roots of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Deputy Premier and Racing Minster Troy Grant joined Racing NSW Chair John Messara and CEO Peter V'landys in his seat of Dubbo for the announcement, which "targets the areas of most need in NSW," with A$21M ($15.2M) to be put into prize money away from Sydney. Minimum prize money for Country TAB meetings will go to A$20,000 ($14,500) a race, a rise of 33%, "while provincial racing minimum stakes levels are set to rise" A$5,000 ($3,600) to A$27,000 ($20,000) from July 1. There will also be 40 showcase meetings "spread across country areas each year," where prize money will start at A$30,000 ($22,000) a race. Messara said, "Country racing was so needy that we needed to give them the full amount from the strategic plan now. Metropolitan racing remains on our radar but at the moment if you win one Saturday city race you can just about cover a year's training fees. In the country you need to win 2.5 to three races to cover the training costs for a year. This package will begin to balance things out a little bit." The legislation for tax parity passed Parliament last week and is "structured to roll out across the next five years progressively." The first payment will be about A$10M ($7.3M) in January, which will fund The Championships in April and Highway races, which have "proved successful for country-based horses." The budget for tax parity under the funding structure has A$19M ($14M) "flowing to thoroughbred racing in the first year" with A$3.17M ($2.3M) to harness racing and A$2.5M ($1.8M) to be "passed into the trust for greyhound racing, while the live baiting inquiry continues." An announcement about how the harness funds will be spent will be made within two months. Racing NSW also committed almost A$50M ($36M) for "capital works at country and provincial race clubs throughout NSW from accumulated race fields fees" (SMH, 11/24). In Sydney, Nic Ashman reported V’landys also announced that from July 1. Racing NSW would commit A$1M ($720,000)-a-year "to a new traineeship and apprenticeship scheme for youth in Regional NSW." He said, "The first priority of the scheme will be to employ apprentice track curators throughout NSW." He also announced a payment of A$2M ($1.5M) per-year to race clubs "throughout NSW to enable clubs to meet their operating costs and operate at best practice levels, to commence from July 1, 2016." V'landys: "Finally, in addition to their 5 percent share of the increased prizemoney jockeys will also receive a further $660,000 per annum in riding fees from 1 July 2016" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 11/24).
