Scottish Premiership Clubs Celtic, Dundee Planning To Play League Game In U.S.

Celtic and Dundee could play a Scottish Premiership game in the U.S. "as early as this season in what would be a landmark occasion for the domestic game," according to Neil Cameron of the HERALD SCOTLAND. This plan was reportedly proposed by Dundee and "while talks between all parties are at the tentative stage, possible dates and venues have been discussed." Boston and Philadelphia are two of the cities "which could hold the match which, if an agreement can be made, would take place before the end of this current campaign" (HERALD SCOTLAND, 11/24). The BBC reported a formal proposal is set to be put before the Scottish Professional Football League in the next few weeks. Talks between Dundee and Celtic and representatives in the U.S. have been ongoing for some time. An SPFL statement said, "The SPFL board would require to sanction any move for a league game to be played overseas. To date the SPFL has not received any application from any member club for any games to be played overseas" (BBC, 11/23). In Edinburgh, Stephen Halliday reported "any such move has to be approved" by FIFA which, along with UEFA, opposed a similar plan by the English Premier League to take a competitive fixture abroad in '08. The move to stage a game against Celtic in the U.S. is understood to have been "informally suggested" by Dundee's American owners Tim Keyes and John Nelms (SCOTSMAN, 11/24). The PA reported Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic "has backed plans to take the club to the United States for a Premiership game as it could give Scotland a much-needed boost." Rogic believes it would "generate fresh interest in the game north of the border." Rogic said, "It’s a good opportunity to expand the game and broadcast Scottish football on a world stage. Celtic obviously has a massive fan base and it would be fantastic to give some fans over there the chance to see us play and hopefully perform. ... Growing up in Australia I knew about the Old Firm and definitely knew about the size of this club, but I guess you could call these plans an innovative way to promote the game a little bit more on the world stage" (PA, 11/24).
