St. Mirren To Rename Stadium As Part Of Paisely City Of Culture Bid

Scottish Championship side St. Mirren is "poised" to rename its stadium in a show of support for Paisley’s bid to become UK City of Culture in '21, according to Graeme McGarry of the HERALD SCOTLAND. Councilors will make a decision on approving the two-year sponsorship deal on Wednesday, and if they do, St. Mirren Park will become the "Paisley 2021 Stadium" in the "lead-up to the announcement of the winning culture bid" in '17. The deal would be worth £30,000 ($45,600) per year to the club, with Paisley UK City of Culture 2021 advertising and branding "also appearing inside the stadium and on the club’s digital media channels." St. Mirren CEO Brian Caldwell said, "These proposals would see our stadium playing a key part of the City of Culture campaign and I am certain that our fans will get right behind it" (HERALD SCOTLAND, 11/16). STV's Douglas Barrie wrote Renfrewshire Council leaders believe the "regeneration of the culture sector could help support 250 new jobs" and bring £89M ($135.4M) to the local economy. The winner of the '21 bid "will take over from Hull" which was named the 2017 City of Culture in '13. Paisley could be up against Perth for the '21 title with councilors there to "approve funding before the deadline" for final applications in April '17 (STV, 11/16).
