Argentine first division side Vélez Sarsfield announced the departure of Manager MIGUEL ANGEL RUSSO and named CHRISTIAN BASSEDAS as its new coach starting in January (CLARÍN, 11/4). ... Spanish Basketball League (ACB) club Iberostar Tenerife announced that its coach, ALEJANDRO MARTÍNEZ, "is leaving the bench for personal reasons" and will be replaced by TXUS VIDORRETA (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 11/5). ... Sussex Cricket Club left-arm spinner HOLLY COLVIN officially announced her retirement from int'l cricket and has been appointed as the new women's cricket senior officer at the Int'l Cricket Council and will be moving to Dubai to take up the position toward the end of November. Colvin made history in '05 by becoming England's youngest ever Test cricketer (of either gender) when she made her int'l debut at the age of 15 (England & Wales Cricket Board). ... Premiership rugby side London Irish announced that FRANK MCCARTNEY has been appointed chair of the board of London Irish Holdings PLC in succession to DAVID FITZGERALD, who has had to stand down for personal reasons. McCartney, who takes up his position with immediate effect, is an experienced int'l businessman with a long standing interest and involvement in rugby and in London Irish in particular. Prior to his retirement from full-time business, McCartney was managing director and chair of the Sports Division of Compass Group. Before that he was founder and managing partner of FMC -- a sports hospitality and catering company (London Irish). ... RALPH STRAUS joined the Int'l Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) as commercial director. He will take up the post at FEI HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland this week. Straus was previously VP of marketing and communications in the department of tourism and commerce marketing in the UAE, with the primary role of developing the global marketing and communications strategy for the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. Prior to taking up the Dubai role, Straus was head of strategy and brand management at FIFA for seven years, in charge of planning and executing the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup marketing campaigns, spearheading global licensing and brand development, and implementing all FIFA experiential marketing initiatives, including FIFA fan fests (FEI). ... The British Olympic Association announced two-time Olympian ADAM PENGILLY as team Great Britain's chef de mission for the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games. Pengilly will lead the team of 15-18-year-olds at the second edition of the Games in February, following the inaugural event at Innsbruck 2012 (Team GB). ... Mediarex Sports & Entertainment named former ESPN Senior Commercial Manager for the X Games EMEA JARROD HOWELL head of sponsorship and brand partnerships. He will work on the company’s launch of the Global Poker League planned for ’16 (GPL).
