National Rugby League Clubs Claim Funding Talks Going Backward

The "combustible relationship" between the National Rugby League and its clubs "is in danger of exploding yet again" after powerbrokers emerged from a meeting on Wednesday claiming talks over future funding had taken a "backward step," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne Chair Bart Campbell, charged with acting as the spokesperson for the clubs, "confirmed the parties had failed to reach an agreement" after a delegation of chairmen held talks with Australian Rugby League Commission Chair John Grant. Grant, who has "taken on more responsibilities in the day-to-day running of the game" following NRL CEO Dave Smith's resignation, is "now likely to find himself in the crosshairs as clubs vent their frustrations." Campbell said, "All of the five attendees there would consider today a backward step." At the "heart of the discussion" is the nature of future club funding and "the make-up of the constitution that governs the independent commission." Clubs want a funding model "that would guarantee them a fixed percentage of revenue above player payments," thereby ensuring their survival. They also want a "greater say over the appointment and retention of commissioners." Grant: "It's not as simple as saying we'll give you money and you will be happy." The clubs are "also hopeful to gaining the lion's share of next year's advance" on the new broadcasting deal struck with the Nine Network, which will net the code A$50M ($35.5M) (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/29).
