Bookies 'Weigh Up Options' As AFP Ditches In-Play Betting Investigation

More online bookmakers are "expected to weigh up whether to join William Hill in offering in-play bets on live sporting events after the Australian Federal Police revealed it would not proceed with an investigation," according to Rick Wallace of THE AUSTRALIAN. Gambling industry sources said that many online bookmakers had systems "ready to roll out and the ruling could see those who were weighing up the risk decide to launch services." The AFP was asked by the Australian Communications & Media Authority to rule on the legality of William Hill's In-Play system, but told ACMA that "it was not a high priority." In a statement the AFP said, "Following evaluation, in line with the AFP's case categorisation and prioritisation model, this matter was not accepted by the AFP for further investigation." The move means William Hill is "free to continue using the In-Play system, which allows people to place bets using a computer or smartphone despite laws stating live bets must be made by phone only." William Hill has been "at the forefront in implementing in-play betting." Fellow British-owned outfts Ladbrokes and Bet 365 "have launched their own equivalent systems." Crownbet, Sportsbet and most other players "have their own versions ready to roll out but have been constrained by doubts over legality" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/29).
