French National Rugby League Exec Committee Meeting Yields No Change To Salary Cap

The exec committee of the French National Rugby League (LNR) met Oct. 19-20 to “discuss the evolution of the salary cap and JIFF” for the ’16-17 season, according to L’ÉQUIPE. In regards to the salary cap, “nothing will change.” It will remain at €10M ($11.4M) “for the next three seasons that correspond to the maturity of the TV contracts made by the LNR for the France championship broadcast.” What “will change is the presence of JIFF” (LNR’s equivalent of qualified homegrown players) on match sheets “so that clubs can benefit from a financial advantage.” Clubs will “line up 14 JIFF players over the entire season (no longer 12).” The amount “dedicated by the LNR to this incentive scheme” is €7M ($8M). Top 14 clubs “fulfilling the JIFF player obligations” will receive €285,714 ($324,234) from the LNR. In the case of clubs “not respecting these obligations,” a club would give up “10% of its fixed TV-Marketing rights,” so €204,000 ($231,000) for a Top 14 club and €116,000 ($132,000) for a ProD2 club. It is a measure “that may not curb the richest Top 14 clubs” (L’ÉQUIPE, 10/21).
