UEFA Figures Show EPL Teams Earn More Than Europe's 48 Smallest Clubs Combined

A report from UEFA has revealed "just how the Premier League's earning power is dwarfing the majority of European football," according to Joe Mewis of the London DAILY MIRROR. The 20 Premier League sides "earn more than the 48 smallest leagues in Europe combined," according to the European governing body's yearly benchmarking report of its 54 member nations' financial health. The English top flight teams earned a total of £3.3B ($5.1B) "according to the latest available financial reports," which is more than the 597 top-flight clubs across the continent outside the German, Italian, Spanish, French and Russian leagues. Underlining the Premier League's "financial prowess is the fact that it now outstrips the rest of Europe in tickets, media income, commercial and sponsorship income -- in other words, all sectors of income" (DAILY MIRROR, 10/21). Also in London, Nick Harris reported of the richest 30 clubs by income in Europe, "the country with the most is England: 12 of them are in the Premier League." The League's collective annual TV income of €1.92B ($2.18B) is "more than double that of the next best league," Italy's Serie A €888M ($1B), almost triple that of Spain's La Liga €741M ($840M), and more than treble that of Germany's Bundesliga €577M ($654M) and France's Ligue 1 €509M ($577M). It is "around 50 times as much as the annual TV revenues in Scotland, Russia and Norway" (DAILY MAIL, 10/20).
