Event Notes: England Rugby Fined $94,000 For Breaching Post-Match Media Obligations

Not only dealing with the "fallout of their shock early ousting from the tournament they are hosting," England rugby must "now accept being fined" nearly A$130,000 ($94,000) for breaching their post-match media obligations after their tournament-ending loss to Australia. The fine "was slapped on the beleaguered side for failing to make at least 10 players available for mixed zone interviews" with accredited media and four players available to non-right holders broadcasters after the 33-13 defeat (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 10/17). ... World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper has risked a "further backlash from Scotland supporters" after joking that "under-fire" referee Craig Joubert "may have needed the bathroom" after he sprinted off the pitch at the end of Australia's controversial World Cup quarterfinal win. Joubert has "roused the ire of rugby union fans around the world after he capped a performance of debatable quality in Australia's 35-34 win by sprinting off the pitch at the end." Gosper promised that a "full review of the official's performance" would be made public on Monday (London TELEGRAPH, 10/19).
