ICC Quintuples Prize Money For Women's Tournaments Up To 2023

The Int'l Cricket Council "announced a five-fold increase in prize money for global women's competitions" from '16-23, according to the BBC. The ICC board said the increase recognized the "improved standard and professionalism in women's cricket." Teams will compete for total prize money of $4.4M during the period, including a pool of $1M for the World Cup in '17. The ICC "has also increased the prize money on offer in the men's game." Among the increases, the board has doubled prize money to $1M "for sides that top the ICC Test Championship table each year" at the cut-off date of April 1. It means the total prize money for the top-ranked Test sides and for men's and women's ICC events from '16-23 will be $65M, "which the ICC said was a 41% increase on the last eight-year cycle" (BBC, 10/13). This prize money is in addition to the Test Cricket Fund of $70M, which the ICC Board introduced last year to help ensure Test-playing sides are able to sustain a home program of Test cricket through '23. The fund will be available from next year to all Test members except the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ICC). SKY SPORTS reported the ICC "approved changes to the format of the Women's World Cup in 2017." All eight teams at the World Cup "will now play a minimum of seven matches during the tournament, which is to be held in England in a round-robin format, with the top four sides progressing to the semi-finals." This means there will be a total of 31 matches, compared to 25 in '13, with $1M "allocated as a prize fund for the tournament" (SKY SPORTS, 10/13).

EDWARDS APPLAUDS NEWS
: England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards applauded news of the increase in prize money awarded to winners of ICC women’s events over the next eight years. Edwards said, "Cricket continues to lead the way for women’s team sport in so many aspects. The ICC are fantastic supporters and drivers of this movement. To have such a substantial increase in prize money for international women’s cricket is testament to where the game is now -- it's incredible." It was also confirmed that the ICC Women’s World Cup to be hosted by the ECB will be an eight team round-robin competition.  Edwards: "The format will give everyone the chance to play more cricket, with every team guaranteed a minimum of seven matches, which will ensure a bigger and better showcase of international women’s cricket than ever before" (ECB).
