Russian Anti-Monopoly Agency Demands Russian Railways Get Rid Of FC Lokomotiv

Russia’s anti-monopoly agency (FAS) has demanded that state-run railways operator Russian Railways get rid of FC Lokomotiv, as the asset is not related to its core business and the company collects subsidies from the state budget. "One thing is clear: if a company applies for subsidies from the state budget, while it spends millions in hard currency on sports clubs, this looks a little strange, to say the least," Dmitry Rutenberg, head of FAS' transport and communications control department, was quoted as saying by TASS. He added that state-run companies' giving up their sports assets could have a positive impact. "Probably, competition in sports will be more fair," he said. Russian Railways reports to FAS as the country's largest railways operator, considered to be "a natural monopoly." Russian Railways and Lokomotiv declined to comment on the situation. Lokomotiv is currently runner-up in the Russian Premier League after 10 games. Last season, the squad was seventh but won the Cup of Russia and qualified for the Europa League. Two months ago, Russian Railways' former President Vladimir Yakunin said Lokomotiv's annual budget is 5.43B rubles ($83M) at the current exchange rate. Following Yakunin's stepping down this past August, some observers noted that it could have an impact on Lokomotiv's future.
