Event Notes: WBSC Announces Cities, Dates Of 2016 World Cups

The World Baseball Softball Confederation on Thursday announced the cities and dates of the '16 baseball world championships, which include the U15 Baseball World Cup, U21 Baseball World Cup and the Women's Baseball World Cup. The U15 Baseball World Cup will be held in Fukushima, Japan from July 29-Aug. 7. The U21 Baseball World Cup will be held in Sinaloa, Mexico from June 17-26. The Women's Baseball World Cup will take place from Sept. 3-11 in Gijang City, South Korea (WBSC). ... Serbia "vowed to take diplomatic action against Albania after stones were hurled at a bus" carrying its national football team in the capital Tirana before the two nations' Euro 2016 qualifying match. Albania Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri said in a statement posted on the government’s website that the country stepped up border controls to "prevent hooligans from entering the country" and deployed 2,300 police. He said that authorities were taking "extreme measures" to ensure "the safety of the visiting team." Serbian FA Security Commissioner Milivoj Mirkov said that the body was "considering the risks to players" who must make a 50-km journey by bus from Tirana to Elbasan stadium on Thursday. Mirkov: "It is possible that the match won't be played if we assess that the safety of our team is threatened in any way" (BLOOMBERG, 10/8). ... A new World Cup for legends will take place in Mexico at the start of '17. Twelve teams will take part -- four from the Americas, six from Europe and one each from Africa and Asia. Former Mexico goalkeeper Jorge Campos, who will coach his country, said, "I want to see Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Brazilian Ronaldo" (BBC, 10/7).
