Formula 1 Driver Jenson Button To Stay At McLaren In '16, Earn $18M

McLaren has confirmed Jenson Button for the '16 season after "dramatically talking him out of retirement," according to Daniel Johnson of the London TELEGRAPH. Button admitted he had been in "two minds" about his future, "a reference to the night of the Singapore Grand Prix," when he admitted his mind was made up, which was "widely perceived to be an admission that he wanted to retire." But McLaren CEO Ron Dennis "talked Button round in fevered negotiations." Dennis "also backed down on plans to force Button to accept a reduced pay deal, with McLaren short of funds." Button will earn around £12M ($18M) next season. Button said in McLaren's official release, "I have been a McLaren driver for six seasons now and in that time I have got to know Ron very well. He and I have had some very good chats these past few weeks -- and during those chats, it has become clear to me that Ron is both utterly determined and uniquely equipped to lead our team through its current difficulties to great successes in the future" (TELEGRAPH, 10/1). The BBC's Andrew Benson reported there was no mention in the statement of Button's teammate Fernando Alonso. The Spanish two-time world champion "is contracted to the team" until the end of '17, but his future "is in doubt" after he said following the Japanese Grand Prix that he "didn't know" whether he would be racing in F1 next year. Asked why there was no mention of Alonso in the statement, a McLaren spokesperson said, "Today is about Jenson" (BBC, 10/1).
