Club Forced Into $2M Loan, FIFA Appeal After Palermo Delays Payment To Charlton Striker

Danish Superliga club Brøndby has taken out a £1.4M ($2.1M) loan as it awaits transfer payment "from the sale of on-loan Charlton striker Simon Makienok," according to Joe Short of the London EXPRESS. The west Copenhagen club "sold striker Makienok, 24," to Serie A side Palermo in the summer of '14. The transfer "is estimated to have cost" the club £2M ($3M) but it has not repaid the full amount. And its delay "has forced cash-strapped Brøndby to request a loan" from President Jan Bech Andersen while it appeals to FIFA. Under the agreement, the 10-time Danish champion "must repay the cash" by July 31. Last month, it was told that "the rest of Makienok's transfer fee from Palermo would be coming," but it is still waiting. Brøndby Dir Søren Vadmand said, "As a club we have never experienced anything like it. We want fair play on the field, but it should also apply off it" (EXPRESS, 9/23).
