The England And Wales Cricket Board Drops Plans To Shorten Championship

Proposed changes to county championships have been "withdrawn after an underwhelming response from the counties," according to Mike Atherton of the LONDON TIMES. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) CEO Tom Harrison and Chair Colin Graves presented plans to reduce the number of championship matches "from 16 to 14" as well as "changes to the 50-over and T20 competitions, to include mid-season blocks of white-ball play" (LONDON TIMES, 9/17). In London, Ali Martin reported counties "submitted written reasons to the ECB outlining their opposition," and now it is "accepted that further negotiations are required." An ECB spokesperson said, "There have been a lot of valuable conversations across the game over recent weeks and the time and feedback have been widely appreciated. We've heard both a desire to look at the long-term interests of the game and an understandable need to have more detail on the impact of any future changes" (GUARDIAN, 9/16). Also in London, Nick Hoult reported that "since their meeting earlier this month, the county chairman have been told by their chief executives the full financial impact of the changes, and some have also been criticized at end of season forums by members for agreeing to a cut in championship cricket." Other counties felt "the plans were the first step toward introducing a city based franchise cricket tournament." Sussex said, "We believe that all the ECB domestic tournaments should involve all first class counties" (TELEGRAPH, 9/16).
