National Rugby League Players Urged To Boycott Games, Not Award Ceremonies

Former National Rugby League player Craig Gower has urged current players to "consider boycotting matches rather than award ceremonies if they want to gain the attention of the NRL," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Gower was "destined to win" the 2003 Dally M medal before the event was canceled by the NRL following "the threat of a boycott from frustrated players." More than a decade later, the Dally M Awards are "again under threat." Gower, however, suggested the players "would be better served sitting out matches." He said, "Why don't they just boycott games? You have to show you're willing to put it out there. It's a big call but when is the league going to recognize the players and the playing group as a voice? ... Just say, 'We're not playing.' The way I look at it (boycotting the Dally M Awards) is not enough. That is player-driven. You're just affecting yourself." RLPA General President Clint Newton, who is leading talks with the NRL, "dismissed suggestions the players were simply chasing money" -- their demands center on player welfare and the retirement fund. Newton: "This is not a cash grab, this is not about increasing the salary cap. We're happy with the salary cap increases. This is about the extra revenue that has come into the game" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 9/11).
