The Premier League champions and FA Cup winners "could take on their American counterparts in a biennial tournament in New York under a proposal made by Major League Soccer" on Tuesday, according to Oliver Kay of the LONDON TIMES. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said that "he has yet to discuss the idea" with EPL CEO Richard Scudamore, but he believes that there would be "significant interest" in creating such a tournament -- perhaps as an int'l expansion of the existing Community Shield fixture. Garber said, "I would love to find a way that we could play our FA Cup champion and our league champion against an FA Cup and league champion tournament and play it in New York City every year" (LONDON TIMES, 9/9). ESPN's Richard Jolly reported Garber said, "We have been talking to the Premier League about doing some sort of official competition as opposed to just having clubs come over to the country on a random basis playing in a tournament that takes place every summer. ... If not every year, then every four years. This concept of super cups involving the MLS, whether it's one with Mexico or one with some of the other leagues, would be smart" (ESPN, 9/9).
