Horse Trainer Sam Kavanagh Guilty Of 23 Charges In NSW Racing Cobalt Inquiry

Horse trainer Sam Kavanagh "is facing a lengthy ban after being found guilty of 23 charges relating to the cobalt and caffeine positive taken from his stayer Midsummer Sun after the Gosford Cup in January," according to Ray Thomas of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. And five others interviewed by Racing New South Wales stewards "are also likely to be hit with hefty penalties after being found guilty for their involvement in the Kavanagh case." In total, Racing NSW "considered 54 charges levelled against the six men and have issued a guilty verdict on all but three of the charges." They are: Kavanaugh -- "guilty of 23 of 24 charges;" Dr. Tom Brennan (veterinarian) -- "guilty of all 12 charges;" Aaron Corby (Flemington Equine Clinic) -- "guilty of 1 of 2 charges;" John Camilleri (harness racing identity) -- "guilty of six of seven charges;" Mitchell Butterfield (disqualified harness trainer) -- "guilty of all five charges;" and Michael O’Loughlin (stablehand) -- "guilty of all four charges." The hearing on penalties for the group "is set down" for Sept. 10 (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 8/31).
