Bundesliga Side Augsburg Faces High Costs For Hosting UEFA Europa League Games

Bundesliga side FC Augsburg "is facing substantial costs for the team participation in the UEFA Europa League," according to Holger Rehm of SPONSORs. The club, for example, "has to purchase additional plastic seats for the conversion of its standing room area in the North Stand." The price tag for those seats alone is €650,000 ($728,000). UEFA "does not allow standing room areas during Europa League or Champions League games." As a result, the capacity of Augsburg's WWK Arena "is reduced to 25,000 during int'l games." The modification itself from standing to seating area costs a further €100,000 ($112,000) per home game (SPONSORs, 8/31).
