League One Side Blackpool Sponsor Village Hotels To Pull Out Of Deal After Season

League One club Blackpool's shirt sponsor on Wednesday admitted it had made a mistake in signing up with the club "after an angry backlash from fans," according to William Watt of the BLACKPOOL GAZETTE. Hotel group Village said that it has been "hit with complaints since announcing it was due to be the Seasiders' shirt sponsor" for the '15-16 season. Village CEO Gary Davis has met with Blackpool Supporters Trust and protest group Tangerine Knights where Village agreed to withdraw sponsorship of the club's shirts at the end of the season. Davis: "Blackpool is one of many teams we have supported and in hindsight maybe it's something that we should have avoided, but the shirt deal is done and we will honor the contract this season. However, we have no direct interaction with the club owners at any level and will not be renewing at the end of the season. We will be happy to continue future sponsorship to a new ownership." Village is "said to be concerned by the negative response to its tie-up with Pool," which has seen a "number of people" cancel their leisure and golf memberships at Village's East Park Drive site in Blackpool. After initially planning to "call on a boycott of Village hotels for Blackpool supporters, BST, which were not involved in any damage caused to the course, now said it is pleased to support them." BST is currently in talks with Blackpool Owner Owen Oyston about buying the club and "submitted a formal bid last month" (BLACKPOOL GAZETTE, 8/26). VITAL FOOTBALL reported BST and Tangerine Knights said in a joint statement, "Village, on their part, have made a number of generous offers to both the Trust, the Knights and the fan base. ... They have also offered a long term sponsorship deal of the club, but only when it is under new ownership and in particular if supporters are involved" (VITAL FOOTBALL, 8/26).
