National Rugby League Weighs Up Transfer Window Along Lines Of Football

The National Rugby League is edging toward bringing in a football-style transfer window "after it emerged a restricted signing period for teenagers" was part of NRL CEO Shane Richardson’s masterplan for the game, according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. A signing window "is a key feature of the plan for the game currently being outlined by Richardson, the NRL head of strategy, during meetings with clubs." A transfer window for the movement of players between clubs "would put an end to years of debate and controversy over the NRL’s unwieldy contract system." While the window "would be restricted to the selection of rookies" -- each club will be allowed to sign six players on contracts worth up to A$60,000 ($43,000) -- it could result in the concept being adopted across the NRL in the future. While the NRL is "currently proposing only one window for teenagers," other sports such as football use two transfer windows. The Australian Football League and NFL "also restrict the period in which players can negotiate with rivals, putting in place strict rules with heavy sanctions for teams and players who violate the guidelines." The NRL’s transfer window for teenagers "would work hand-in-glove with proposals to ban clubs signing players until they turned 18 and restricting players agents from recruiting talent until they turned 17" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 8/28).
