Football Notes: Arsenal Manager Predicts Use Of Video Technology To Assist Offside Rule

Arsenal Manager Arsène Wenger believes video technology "will be used in games to assist the offside rule." Video technology trials in matches were put back "at least 12 months by the game's lawmakers in February." But Wenger, whose side had a goal "controversially ruled out for offside in Monday's 0-0 draw with Liverpool," said, "I'm convinced that video technology will come into football. The next step will be to help the offside rule" (BBC, 8/27). ... Bulgarian club Lokomotiv Plovdiv said that it will continue its participation in the Bulgarian league after the Bulgarian Football Union "nearly halved the fine on the club" for its fans' alleged racist behavior earlier this month. Lokomotiv was considering whether to quit the Bulgarian league after the BFU fined the club $21,224 after the Aug. 8 match against Litex Lovech (REUTERS, 8/27). ... The president of a Malaysian second tier side "has taken the drastic action" of dismissing the bulk of its squad after accusing some players of feigning injury in order to spend their wages. Negeri Sembilan FA President Seri Mohamad Hasan said that "only six of the squad had been retained following a sixth-placed finished in the 12-team league, with head coach K. Devan also dismissed after they failed to qualify for the Malaysian Cup." Mohamad said that "new recruits would have to accept a low base salary but would earn larger bonuses for winning" (REUTERS, 8/27).
