CONMEBOL, FIFA To Audit Finances Of Bolivian Football Federation

CONMEBOL President Juan Ángel Napout said that his organization and FIFA will audit the finances of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF), whose president, Carlos Chávez, was jailed for alleged corruption, according to Pedro Servin of the AP. The FBF fired Chávez on Tuesday, when he was also fired from his position as treasurer of CONMEBOL. Napout said that the audit "will be carried out through a private company." Chávez was jailed in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in July "on charges he diverted funds from a charity match." Napout said that Chavez's role as CONMEBOL treasurer will be temporarily filled by Argentine FA President Luis Segura. Napout also said that CONMEBOL's exec committee will meet in Asunción, Paraguay on Oct. 10 to "examine a preliminary report by a U.S. law firm reviewing CONMEBOL's contracts with companies accused in the U.S. as part of a corruption investigation at FIFA." He said that the contracts "were signed before he took over as president last year" and added, "We plan to make big reforms to CONMEBOL, but we need to know the opinion of these lawyers first" (AP, 8/27). The EFE reported Bolivian authorities issued arrest warrants for the four children of FBF Exec Secretary Alberto Lozada, who is currently in jail on corruption charges. Guillermo, Rómulo Alberto, María Cristina and María Claudia Lozada are suspected of receiving money from the FBF in their personal bank accounts. They are "believed to be out of the country" (EFE, 8/27).
