Malaysian Open Loses Title Sponsor Maybank For 2016 Event

The Malaysian Golf Association announced that Maybank has "unilaterally withdrawn its title sponsorship for the 2016 Malaysian Open," according to THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER. MGA President Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said that Maybank was "not satisfied with explanations given to important issues raised by it as the title sponsor." Mohd Anwar said that Maybank had set three conditions, "including insisting on engaging Globalone as the event promoter." However, the MGA had already appointed and signed a contract with World Sports Group as the event promoter. According to Mohd Anwar, the other two conditions given by Maybank were that the tournament must be held in February and the host venue is the Royal Selangor Golf Club. Despite the withdrawal, the MGA president assured the golf fraternity in Malaysia and in the region that the Malaysian Open "would be held at a venue and date that would be announced later" (THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER, 8/24).
