Franchise Notes: Super League Rugby Club Castleford Tigers Launches Radio Station

Super League rugby club Castleford Tigers has started its own radio station to provide commentaries from matches. Castleford Tigers Radio has been launched after the club "has been impressed" with the work done over the last two seasons by local community radio station 5 Towns FM and Tiger Talk Radio. The club became aware recently that Tiger Talk Radio "could not afford to continue to operate." But club sponsor Sys Servers has "now come to the rescue" (Hemsworth and South Elmsall EXPRESS, 8/11). ... J.League side V-Varen Nagasaki has launched two special kits to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city. The bombings by the U.S. ended the Second World War with Japan surrendering on Aug. 12 "but killed at least 39,000 in the city." The V-Varen "Pray for Peace" kit has been released as up to 70% of Japanese citizens don't know the date of the bombing (London INDEPENDENT, 8/11). ... Borussia Dortmund supporters are planning a protest against "abnormal" prices for their game at Hoffenheim in September after the home side set ticket prices at €55 ($60). Hoffenheim "placed Bayern Munich and Dortmund in the top category this season." A message addressed to BVB fans on the Kein Zwanni website read, "That price structure can't be justified. We are asked to pay significantly more only because our jerseys have the wrong colours" (ESPN, 8/11). ... The "famous black gates at the entrance of White Hart Lane have been taken down and stored in order to preserve them during construction of the new stadium." The gates "will be reincorporated into the new stadium's design in a bid to maintain a tangible link to the club's history" (London DAILY MAIL, 8/10). ... A Paraguayan club "has been ordered to pay compensation to a footballer whose contract was suspended while he was treated for cancer." Uruguayan Sebastian Ariosa, then playing for Olimpia, "was diagnosed with a chest tumour in May 2013." FIFPRO said that "his contract was suspended in December that year until he was fit" (BBC, 8/11).
