Facility Notes: Baku Waiting For FIA's Approval Of Its Formula 1 Circuit

The organizers behind the inaugural Formula 1 race in Azerbaijan in '16 are "currently awaiting approval from the FIA with regard to the homologation of the circuit." Plans have been submitted for the event, to be known as the European Grand Prix and scheduled to take place on July 15-17 next year in Baku. Baku Grand Prix CEO Arif Rahimov said, "There are a few minor changes to be implemented which are to be discussed, they are not confirmed yet" (AUTOSPORT, 8/3). ... Serie A side Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis revealed his plans for Stadio San Paolo, "including reducing the capacity to 41,000." The arena, which is leased from the local council, currently holds 60,240 spectators, "but is badly in need of renovation, and the patron explained his plans." De Laurentiis said, "We want to give Stadio San Paolo a new soul" (FOOTBALL ITALIA, 8/3).
