Argentine first division side Lanús player DIEGO BARISONE died on Tuesday morning at the age of 26 after a car accident. His car reportedly "hit the back of a truck" at 5am local time (LA NUEVA, 7/28). ... Indian sprinter DUTEE CHAND said that "she is glad others will not face similar abuse to her after being cleared to compete following a landmark gender case." Chand, 19, "had been banned since last summer after failing a hormone test." But the Court of Arbitration for Sport has suspended "hyperandrogenism" rules, which will be scrapped if athletics bosses cannot provide new evidence (BBC, 7/28). ... Former Australian of the Year ADAM GOODES "has been given time off" by Australian Football League side Sydney Swans after "suffering months of jeering from spectators" in the country's premier sports competition. Anti-racism activist Goodes, who is Aboriginal, "has been booed by crowds" for most of this AFL season (REUTERS, 7/28).

FORMER SA CAPTAIN DIES
: Former South Africa and Nottinghamshire captain CLIVE RICE "has died aged 66." One of "the best all-rounders of his era," he played for Notts between '75 and '87 and led the team to the County Championship title in '81 and '87. Rice "had been receiving treatment for a brain tumour" and died in a hospital in Cape Town. He "played 482 first-class matches," mainly for Transvaal, Natal and Notts, between '69 and '94 (BBC, 7/28).
