England Manager Roy Hodgson At Odds With FA Over Contract Situation

England national team Manager Roy Hodgson has admitted for the first time that he would "like to remain in his post" beyond Euro 2016 and suggested that the FA's decision "not to discuss his future until after the tournament could overshadow preparations for the finals in France," according to Rory Smith of the LONDON TIMES. The 67-year-old is adamant he is "young enough" to guide the team through a qualifying group for Russia 2018. Hodgson's present contract expires at the end of this season and he has "not discussed an extension" with FA Chair Greg Dyke for almost a year. New FA CEO Martin Glenn said that the organization's policy is no longer to offer managers "long-term contracts, regardless of performance" in leading finals. Glenn: "I would rather be relating contracts to results." Glenn insisted that he believed Hodgson was "comfortable with that arrangement, but the England manager's response to those comments suggested that assessment may not be entirely accurate." Hodgson's desire to remain in his position has "no doubt been reinforced by what was a relatively kindly draw" for England in St. Petersburg. The focus will be "on the two meetings" with Scotland -- the "first competitive games between the countries this century" and the first in World Cup qualifying since the '50s. The "meetings with the Auld Enemy, of course, dominated Hodgson's thoughts" -- he described it as "the stand-out fixture" -- and suggested it would "ignite the imagination" of fans on both sides of the border (LONDON TIMES, 7/27).
